Branch
Branch is an interactive generative video work that Lincoln Schatz debuted at ARCO Madrid in 2006.
1.12.2006/Chicago/Helicopter
The 1.12.2006/Chicago/Helicopter prints are produced from software composites of video taken from a helicopter above Chicago. They are each a unique combination of several video layers.
Slice
Slice is a generative video work by Lincoln Schatz that was exhibited at the Dacra Foundation during Art Basel Miami 2005.
Me Me, You Me
Me Me, You Me is a meditation on the idea of the two selves: the outer self, which one presents to the world, and the inner self, which generates the internal dialog. Onscreen there are two aspects of the viewer: in a narrow box on the right side is a grainy black & white image, [...]
Next
Next deals with the way humans attempt to assemble a narrative of their lives. Onscreen, sections of images are fit together like a puzzle: some bleeding through, others demonstratively opaque. Images are seen appearing and disappearing at a brisk rate. They recombine to create new hybrid compositions, which feel decidedly optimistic as the puzzle comes [...]
Path
Like a human being, Path is constantly making decisions that yield information to be retained and retrieved. Unlike human beings, however, there is not a singular branching path that clearly traces the past. Instead, there are multiple memories presented onscreen that are continuously being manipulated and recombined.
Gumbo Limbo
Gumbo Limbo is a mirror-like video work exploring perception and the way people interpret images of their lives. This interactive video-memory artwork takes its name from the gumbo limbo tree, which is known for constantly shedding its bark in thin, paper-like layers. A keen observer of events, the artwork thrives on absorbing images from its [...]
Across Time
Across Time is a site-specific video-memory installation created for the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies that was commissioned to document and commemorate the Institute as it expands its home as well as its vision. The piece will track the Institute and its visitors in its present location, through the construction of its state-of-the-art new building, [...]
Stitch
Stitch is about memory and the way we recall images. This new media work functions as an observer of events by capturing video from its environment. Stitch has a start date on which it begins to capture video and can store up to eight years worth of data onto a computer. Participants’ movement in front [...]
Inter-View
Inter-View is an alchemist of memory that synthesizes new histories from the world around it. Shared images from the cameras are recalled, displayed, and manipulated based upon the participants’ physical interaction through computer vision. The visual environment is captured from several points on the sculpture and played back in layers present, recent, and distant.
Sophie
Sophie is a single-screen video sculpture that utilizes interactive software. The artwork takes the ideas of uniting masses but instead introduces the concept into more personal settings. Viewers are able to interact with, share, and experience their own memories’ collisions.
Unproposed Proposals: 10 Stations, Travelers’ Tales, Culture Merge
10 Stations compels public transit commuters to look up from their newspapers and see the flow of humanity around them. Over time this work will function as an observer of events by capturing video from its environment and displaying images of commuters on the platform walls. 10 Stations consists of video cameras and digital projectors [...]
Merge
Merge is the first generation of custom video-memory works by Lincoln Schatz. Using software that is able to track and sense human motion, this program “sees” motion through a camera and is able to return a large amount of data about what it perceives: location, direction, duration, number of people, velocity, etc. The way Merge [...]
