Civic Engagement at PICNIC ’09 Amsterdam

In times of peril and uncertainty, it is the creative and innovative minds that emerge as the leaders of change. PICNIC ’09 will cover major and minor challenges that lie ahead, from a critical but optimistic point of view. What are the great breakthroughs that will change our lives in the coming decade? How will they heal our economy, our environment and make our lives more livable? What are the alternative scenarios for our future? PICNIC ’09 will review our world, economy, society and daily lives.

Lincoln Schatz, video and new media artist, began developing his generative portraits in 2001 as approximations of human memory. Driven by chance, interaction, massive amounts of visual data, and freed from control of the artist and subject, his portraits take on lives of their own.

Initially designed for a specialized audience (art) but based on a commonality (memory), Schatz has put his process to work far afield of the art world by engaging specialists in other disciplines as well as thousands of ordinary citizens to collaborate for social change. Emphasizing shared experience and infinite ways of looking at an issue, his work opens up radical possibilities for the future of public art and activism.

Lincoln Schatz will be presenting as part of the Civic Engagement session at PICNIC.
